INTRODUCTION

The School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a non-tenure track position of Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor-in-Residence in the area of Product/Industrial Design at the Storrs campus to begin in Fall 2020.  The successful candidate will have an appointment in an appropriate department in the School of Engineering.

The School of Engineering, in close collaboration with the School of Fine Arts, has recently launched the Krenicki Arts and Engineering Institute, a multi-million-dollar initiative which will house new programs jointly developed by both schools. A new program in Industrial Design will be one of the cornerstone programs in this new institute.  The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the teaching mission and will have significant opportunities for collaboration across schools as well as for curricular and program design. We anticipate that this faculty member will also contribute significantly to the School of Engineering’s Freshmen Cornerstone Design Laboratory.

Candidates should show evidence of accomplishment in product and industrial design practice as well as innovative pedagogical approaches. Candidates should actively practice industrial design or have a record of scholarship in this area through experience in design consultancies, in-house design, or as independent designers. Candidates should have working familiarity with the fields of architecture, interior design, and lighting design. Special consideration will be given to candidates with expertise in engineering, smart and emerging technologies, and human factors. Candidates should be current on advanced methods of digital and physical modeling, identifying appropriate scale of production both manual and robotic. Candidates must be forward thinking about how product and industrial design practices and methods adeptly respond to complex local and global production and fabrication contexts, as well as how they relate to general human concerns.

The faculty member will teach 6 courses or their equivalent per academic year and will be expected to work collaboratively to design new coursework to support an Industrial Design Program at both the major and minor levels. While this position is housed in the School of Engineering, the expectation is that there will be significant opportunities to work with faculty from both the School of Engineering and the School of Fine Arts. A faculty member in this position will hold regular office hours and participate in extracurricular or service activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, review panels, thesis and capstone supervision, independent study, advising, committee work, etc.)

As an In-Residence (teaching-track) position, the faculty member will be expected to largely focus on teaching and student-focused activities but is encouraged to actively pursue research and creative practice as their time allows. The faculty member will work with the deans, associate deans, program directors, and staff in both the School of Engineering and the School of Fine Arts to implement support for curricula, policies, and facility designs that are responsive to and respectful of diverse users.

The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate level, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development.  The successful candidate will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their teaching, possible research, and/or public engagement, the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates at the Instructor-in-Residence level must have an earned Master’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related field, or demonstrated equivalence through portfolio review in product/industrial design;  At the Assistant or Associate Professor-in-Residence level, candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related field. 
  • Candidates for Instructor-in-Residence or Assistant Professor-in-Residence must have a proven record of potential in teaching; candidates for Associate Professor-in-Residence must have a proven record of excellence in teaching.
  • Documented evidence of professional and creative work in designing and implementing a variety of product types, services, and developing ecological manufacturing protocols.
  • Evidence of work that is socially engaged, innovative, and challenges the status quo.
  • Ability to translate professional knowledge of innovative practice in the field into compelling and relevant curricular development.
  • Computer experience and knowledge of industry standard 2D and 3D CAD modeling software with experience in and knowledge of computer output/machining technologies including but not limited to rapid prototyping, CNC machinery, and laser cutting.
  • Knowledge of emerging digital and automated output/machining technologies including, but not limited to, multi-material additive manufacturing, multi-axis CNC milling, digital output for soft materials, and physical computing.
  • Excellent oral and written skills, communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collectively.
  • A proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training, and aesthetic sensibilities.
  • An interest in working collaboratively within UConn, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as a senior-level designer or principal.
  • 3+ years of teaching at the college or university level in Industrial Design, Engineering, or a closely related field, preferably in courses that include a combination of core studios, seminars and tutorials, at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Field experience at multiple scales of commercial production; from low volume to mass production.
  • A proven professional record of working or teaching in an interdisciplinary environment, preferably between Engineering and Industrial Design. 
  • Record of creating or teaching interdisciplinary coursework, or STEAM related programming.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, annually renewable non-tenure track position with the possibility of subsequent annual academic-year reappointment, contingent on positive reviews and program funding, and may lead to a multi-year appointment.  Employment is conditional upon the timely completion of an approved I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form).  The anticipated start date is August 23, 2020.
